We have uploaded some screenshots of the Elflight Engine technology preview running on various platforms. Everything has been loaded into the game using the Elflight World Builder. We have created the buildings and other models in Autodesk Maya and imported them into the engine using our new Collada pipeline.

Water, Collada and Forums

We have recently added support for water into the engine. The water itself is translucent, specular-lit, textured and animated and supports under-water fogging as well as tides. We are considering vertex animation and other effects for inclusion in the future.

We are in the final stages of developing a Collada 1.4.1 importer for the engine. This provides a useful additional pipeline for getting animated models out of 3D packages such as Maya and 3D Studio. The module has been developed to be as lean and fast as possible since it will eventually be made available in Everplanes.

Since the Elflight technology preview is nearing completion, we felt that the time was right to launch a forum on the Coded Edge website. We looked at a number of open source options for this, but in the end decided to develop our own.

The forum will eventually support game server authentication integration as well as other features, but will initially be in basic form. We plan to have the initial version available later this week.

We hope that it will be useful in answering any questions people may have and to bring members up to date on developments, together with a facility for general discussion.

Release Schedule

As a result of internal testing and discussion as well as comments from interested parties, we decided to incorporate additional features into the Elflight Engine and World Builder. This does mean that our release schedule has changed but we firmly believe that this will be reflected in the quality of the upcoming technology preview.

We are planning to release screenshots and movies soon and will also be contacting those of you that have signed up to be beta testers. Thank you to everybody that has expressed an interest in this project to date.

Elflight World Builder

Leading up to the launch of the technology preview in Q4 2007 we'll be revealing more about the one of the main Elflight Engine tools. Details of the 'Elflight World Builder' will be published on the Coded Edge website at the end of September.

The Elflight World Builder is a real-time 3D editing tool which enables artists and developers to edit the world from within the world itself. Any changes made are instantly visible enabling rapid collaborative development of 3D environments.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody that has expressed an interest in the Elflight engine and we look forward to posting further announcements soon.

Elflight Engine Announced

Coded Edge is pleased to announce the Elflight Engine - a high performance 3D streaming game engine.

Developed over the last 18 months, it has been designed from the 'ground up' for use over the World Wide Web.

The streaming aspect of the engine has been the result of careful consideration and essentially allows a near 'instant play' experience for the gamer. No massive downloads and no massive updates!

The technology is particularly well suited to the development of MMOs and Virtual Worlds. The data can be streamed incrementally as the player explores the world around them and the worlds can be updated in real time, often unnoticeable to the player.

Since the engine uses industry-standard OpenGL and Java, games developed using the Elflight Engine will run on Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. Most major web browsers are supported including Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari.

An early version of the Elflight Engine has already been utilised in a commercial project and has demonstrated it's resilience and performance.

Coded Edge are in the final stages of developing a technology preview of the current version of the engine to demonstrate it's features and in particular, it's MMO capabilities. The platform for that demonstration will be an MMO game called Elflight.

A formal announcement will be made on the Coded Edge website when the Elflight technology preview is available. Our current conservative estimate is quarter 4, 2007.

A second commercial application of the engine demonstrating its wide versatility is under development and an announcement of it's release will be made in due course.

If you would like to subscribe to the Coded Edge newsletter, you will automatically receive notification by email of further news and developments.
